Welcome to the website of

Finnjet Historical Society!

As she entered service in 1977, the FINNJET was a ship of superlatives and for more than a generation, she was benchmarking the passenger travel between Germany and Finland. In naval architecture, in shipbuilding and in operation, she was predominant. Furthermore, she left a deep impression in the minds of many of the more than 5 million passengers transported by her and hardly any other ship has gained such a significant prominence and popularity in European waters.

In 2008, the era of the FINNJET was finally over.

For this reason, we, six former passengers and one member of the crew of the FINNJET, founded the FINNJET HISTORICAL SOCIETY, to perpetuate the memory of this outstanding ship and to gather a deeper look in her history, her technology and the human life on board. Our objective is to give documents and memories a stage for sharing them. Our interests concern also the history of the Hansa-route between Germany and Finland, the predecessors and followers of FINNJET, the shipyards, the operating companies and, widely, the ferry operations in the Baltic Sea.

We warmly welcome all FINNJET´s former passengers and members of her crew to join our society and tell stories, memories and join us to write her history down the way as you experienced travelling with FINNJET.

The FINNJET HISTORICAL SOCIETY is a non-commercial association, which was founded with kind endorsement of Finnlines Oyj, the operating company of the FINNJET in the first 10 years.

“The fittest passenger vessel ever driven up on the scrapping beach of Alang, India.”

“The most unprofitable breaking at Alang, due to the superb condition of the vessel and her icebreaker hull.”
