Hansa-traffic past and present::[fixed] News in the Baltic traffic area
Today I have added some pictures into our Photogallery section from the MV Urd accident in Travemünde. In future I would like to add some more pictures of vessels, which arrive in or depart from the harbours, where GTS Finnjet operated from or to.

MV Urd is now in the Lindoe shipyard together with MV Wind Perfection (ex MV Christian IV, ex MV Julia) which will be prepared for her new tasks. MV Urd was escorted by tug Axel the whole way from Travemünde. The average speed was very low by approximetaly 6 knots, surely a requirement for the sailing. The repair works should take about at least 2 weeks.

MV Nils Holgersson should be in the shipyard at least to next Saturday (19.05.2012)

Hansa-traffic past and present::[solved] News from the old FINNJET harbours
After more than one year nothing reminds on the Aquatop swimming bath center in Travemünde. There is only left a green lawn.

But therefore the new sea promenade gets its new look more and more. Parts of the new surfacing are already completed. The new sitting area at the beginning of the promenade in height of the pilot tower and kids playground will be build up. A new pirate´s playground at the end of the promenade has been built up. The new railings at the fountain area at height of the Strandbahnhof railway station, with its new round look has been completed.

The new traffic control center for the German West Baltic area has hardly got its final look. Only some details have to be made. The building process has to be completed in the next days or weeks, I think.

There are new thoughts, to renew also the Trave promenade. This should also be nice, because of its concrete look of the 1970ies.

SS Rotterdam [by cos918]

Hansa-traffic past and present:: SS Rotterdam
Hello all
The ss Rotterdam in Rotterdam is up for sale. The price has droped from 120M euro to 81M euro. In her first year she had over 500 000 vistors and yet she still does not break even. The brings in to light the cost of big ship presavition. It all raises the question If Finnjet had been given a perment birth in Turku would she have broken even?

John

GTS Finnjet:: reason for scrapping finnjet
Hello,

It is completely possible that one main diesel which "someone" said was damaged, was actually only unserviceable due to an inexperienced crew taking over in Italy, but still had a certain number of good hours in her.

We heard from the last Finnish crewmen that they had trouble in teaching the new engineering crew. "Only one man out of them understood something"

It is a fact that a new inexperienced crew destroyed a brand new AC compressor.

We have conflicting opinions of what the core state of the main diesels was. Less conflict about the five aux diesels requiring replacing.

More efficient gas turbines were projected already in the early 1990's, but the owner decided to overhaul other ships instead. Her new reduction gears retained this future upgrade option.

Finnjet could most likely have run profitably without any major alterations on the lucrative South-Korea - Japan route, which was thwarted by South-Korean legislation penalizing ships based on their age.

What no one contests is that her "icebreaker" hull was in magnificent shape, which the men in India learned the hard way. She was well worthy of fresh machines or an exempt to junk ship laws governing for instance Greece. By letting her machine upgrades slip, she ended up in a state where a multitude of her machines required replacing to make her more economical in more competitive markets.

Finally, her designer and builder Mr. Saarikangas had projected a lifespan of 70-80 years.

That's the best answer I can give today based on discussions and her papers.
